The planning is done, the ticket sale has started: With the grand opening concert by Erin Costelo at Theater am Goetheplatz, the festival of jazzahead! starts on Thursday, April 14, which this year has Canada as partner country.
Another highlight is the gala concert on Friday, April 29 at Die Glocke. Laila Biali and Malika Tirolien will perform in a double concert starting at 8 pm.
All three artists represent the wide range of the Canadian music scene. Erin Costelo has often been compared to Nina Simone or Carole King, toured with Dr. John and Boz Scaggs and played with Levon Helm ("The Band"). The artists at the gala concert also represent a broader understanding of the jazz genre: pianist, singer and songwriter Laila Biali has already been to jazzahead! once, she thrilled the audience at the showcase festival in 2016. Her music is in the tradition of various Canadian greats such as Diana Krall and Michael Bublé, but also Joni Mitchell or Leonard Cohen. The influences of jazz, soul, blues, folk and pop combine in her music in a very natural way. Malika Tirolien, on the other hand, is best known internationally for her various collaborations, including with Cirque du Soleil, Snarky Puppy or the Metropole Orchestra. The singer, songwriter and producer comes from Guadeloupe and lives in Montreal. Her music combines great emotion and a fresh look at different genres with a deep understanding of jazz. Her voice is often described as "sublime".
