Fr 20. April 2018 | 8 PM | Großer Saal

In Anna Maria Jopek, one of Poland’s best-known singers comes to Bremen; she has previously performed with Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. And as Poland is jazzahead!’s partner country this year, she brings with her the no less famous Polish pianist Leszek Możdżer. Anna Maria Jopek and Leszek Możdżer both share firstly a classical education, secondly admiration for Polish music, and at last a great friendship on stage. This gala concert is a rare joint appearance and a special premiere: A salute to the masters, styles and genres of Polish music that have shaped their artistic personalities. Expect references to Chopin, Szymanowski and Mazurka.

Anna Maria Jopek (voc), Leszek Możdżer (p), Piotr Nazaruk (voc, fl, zth, Polish folk instruments), Robert Kubiszyn (b, voc), Paweł Dobrowolski (dr)

The second band on the stage is the international quartet of saxophonist Maciej Obara, which is releasing an exceptional debut this November with prestigious label ECM. Obara and pianist Dominik Wania previously played together ten years ago in the band of legendary trumpeter Tomasz Stańko. For this quartet they joined forces five years ago with two creatives of the Norwegian scene, each a band leader himself. Internationally, they performed at the most famous jazz festivals. The Maciej Obara Quartet creates a sound that transforms the compositions of Obara into an experience with wonderful freedom, spheric and vigorous – four talents who built up an outstanding reputation, particularly live.

Maciej Obara (as), Dominik Wania (p), Ole Morten Vaagan (b), Gard Nilssen (dr)

The jazzahead! gala concert is one of the highlights during jazzahead! festival. Partner country of the international trade fair and festival in 2018 is Poland and so, also the gala concert is all about Polish jazz.
