LAV SOL are August Glännestrand (drums), Heiða Karine Jóhannesdóttir (tuba) and Håvard Aufles (keyboards). The name means ‘low sun’ in Norwegian. All three are part of the jazz community in Trondheim, Norway. The trio was formed in 2021 to create improvised music inspired by electronica, hip-hop and rock. Influences from Ringo Starr to Aphex Twin’s drum machines are audible; and a foundation of acoustic instruments blends with electronically produced sounds. They work with graphic scores, composing with riffs and creating structures for sections of improvisation. Their approach to improvised music is through the prism of hip-hop/electronica; the improvisations and the visuals complement and interact.
