Lionel Loueke didn’t start playing guitar until he was 17. He is praised as a “musical painter” by his mentor Herbie Hancock. He combines harmonic sophistication, soaring melodies, a deep knowledge of African music, and conventional and extended guitar techniques to create a warm and evocative sound of his own.
His long-term partnership with Edition Records is evident in recent years with a reissue of his album “HH” by Gilles Peterson in 2022 and a duet with Grammy-nominated singer Gretchen Parlato in 2023.
