Quartabê from São Paulo is “a somewhat undisciplined group that learns… from great masters of Brazilian music”. Since 2015, its identity has been based on the metaphor of a classroom where experimentation, play, boldness and irreverence are the norm. It is untypical for Brazil in being led by women instrumentalists/ arrangers/ composers/ singers/ improvisers (Joana Queiroz, Maria Beraldo and Mariá Portugal). Quartabê’s most recent album celebrates iconic Brazilian singer-guitarist Dorival Caymmi (1914-2008). “Quartabê seeks to recreate in its own way the ritualistic aura of this ‘boat-work’, taking it to unknown currents and letting itself be cradled by the infinite sea of Caymmi.”Maria Beraldo (cl & b-cl), Joana Queiroz (cl & b-cl), Chicão (synths), Mariá Portugal (dr, electronica)
