“Wow. This record takes me straight to a world of feelings and perceptions where I want to be.” (Beate Sampson, Bavarian Radio). “Ruins and Remains” is Dutch pianist Wolfert Brederode’s fourth album as leader on ECM: a suite for piano, string quartet and percussion composed by Brederode in 2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Recorded in the Sendesaal in Bremen, it was produced by Manfred Eicher, and released in September 2022. “The piece has to do with grief and loss, and learning to stand up again”, says Brederode. Also featuring drummer Joost Lijbaart, with whom Brederode has worked consistently since 2004, and the Matangi String Quartet.
