Old shoe shiner Chico is reminded of swing, bebop and his time as a jazz musician by a melody from the radio. In pre-Castro Cuba, Chico’s bittersweet love story with singer Rita begins. After their first successes together as musicians, Rita moves to New York to pursue a career. Chico also later leaves Cuba, but although their paths cross, fate tears them apart again. The film shows in detailed animation how Chico and Rita move through the jazz scene of the 1940s and 1950s and sets a monument to Latin jazz and musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker or Chano Pozo.
