At the end of August 2020, Vadim Neselovskyi spent three production days at the Sendesaal to record his Odessa Suite for an album release. In Odessa, at the time still part of the Soviet Union, Vadim Neselovskyi had begun classical piano studies. At the same time, he became enthusiastic about jazz, inspired by recordings of American luminaries such as Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Thelonious Monk. In his early 20s, he was given the opportunity to transfer to the renowned Berklee School Of Music in Boston/USA.Neselovskyi became a member of vibraphonist Gary Burton’s band. His album debut as a leader, “Spring Song” was produced by pianist Fred Hersch. The versatile Ukrainian, who today commutes between the USA and Germany, was also in the studio for composer John Zorn.
Vadim Neselovskyi: “I was born and raised in Odessa, Ukraine — a gorgeous harbor city on the Black Sea. I know that almost everyone heard of Odessa, and yet not many people really know much about it. Some heard of this city because of Eisenstein’s film “Battleship Potemkin”, some know it as birthplace of violinist David Oistrakh. Many know Odessa as a very important center of Jewish life at the beginning of the 20th century… In my new project I want to tell my personal story about this city. My new piece will take the listener on an imaginary tour around my hometown, filled with memories, historical references and dreams…”
