Um/Welt is a developing musical project from Venice-born double bassist and composer Marco Centasso. The German word Umwelt means “environment”, or more literally “surrounding world”. Biologist Jacob Uexküll adopted the concept to denote each person’s subjective universe or horizon for interacting with the world. The Um/Welt project investigates the creation of worlds in interaction with each other through sound. “My aim is to build an authentic dialogue with a diverse audience,” says Centasso. By creating a space for dialogue between band members, the project asks questions on the interaction between different worlds, taking on the quest to go beyond the barriers of human communication.
