about jazzahead! trade fair

jazzahead! is an exhibition and meeting point for the international jazz scene. Since its premiere in 2006, the event has enriched the regional and national cultural scene with its high quality and diverse jazz as well as with international flair.

With its unique concept combining showcase festival, conference, exhibition and festival – all revolving around the central topic “jazz” – the event has become the must-go networking event for the global jazz scene.

Partner Country 2018: Polen, in cooperation with Adam Mickiewicz Institute

Poland, as jazzahead!’s partner country 2018, will be highlighted with its jazz scene during jazzahead! festival and trade fair. The opening showcase night is dedicated to the partner country, presenting eight Polish bands at the stages in Hall 7 and Kulturzentrum Schlachthof. At the fair, a partner country lounge as well as a stand of the partner country will be the place to get in contact with the Polish jazz scene and its protagonists. During the jazzahead! festival, Poland will also be the focus point of various events that introduce Polish culture to the Bremen based audience far beyond jazz and music. This festival, starting April 6th,2018, will over the course of two and a half weeks present literature, art, theatre, performances as well as music and will find its culmination point during the jazzahead! trade fair weekend.

jazzahead! chooses its partner countries, applications are not possible. However, countries and export bureaus can express their interest via e-mail to project manager Sybille Kornitschky.

Former partner countries:
2017: Finland
2016: Switzerland
2015: France
2014: Denmark
2013: Israel
2012: Spain
2011: Turkey

SYMPOSIUM FOR IMPROVISATION & JAZZ FOR KIDS IN PRACTICE

Within the jazzahead! trade fair in Bremen
Thursday, April 19th 2018 · 10 am – 5 pm

Improvisation & jazz do not only concern specialists and experts. They are vivid practice, holding an enormous potential – especially for kids. That came clear during the symposium „Improvisation and jazz for kids“ during jazzahead! 2017. At the same time it became visible that at present this potential is barely used. In order to change that this year’s aim goes beyond the mere inventory and is followed by concrete offers: How exactly can improvisation and jazz be conveyed to children – whether in school ensembles, music lessons, in direct encounters with jazz musicians or from stage during concerts. By this, questions concerning methodology and didactics move into the center – for instance in the sense of an improvisation-education. It‘s about tools for mediation, a methodic tool kit and successfully tested models. Three interacting key areas will be emphasized during the symposium. The symposium will be preceded by two workshops, the results of which will be shown and discussed during the conference.

The symposium will be held in German.

FAQ

Showcases

WHEN DOES THE APPLICATION PHASE START?

Applications for jazzahead! 2018 showcase festival can be submitted from the beginning of September 2017 and will end on November 02nd, 2017.

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR A SHOWCASE?

Precondition for applying for a showcase slot is that the band/artist is proposed by a registered (co-)exhibitor or professional participant (all days) of jazzahead! 2018. Of course, bands/artists can register as (co-)exhibitors (e.g. with an umbrella stand) or professional participants (all days) themselves as well. An international jury of experts will then review all applications and select which of the proposed bands/artists will get one of the showcase slots. After the registration it is very easy to submit an application online via our integrated application system at www.jazzahead.de. Please read the next FAQ to get more information about the online application.

HOW DO I APPLY VIA JAZZAHEAD.DE?

New since 2017: the showcase application system is integrated into our website www.jazzahead.de. As registered (co-) exhibitor or professional participant (all days) you just need to log into your jazzahead! account "my jazzahead!". After log in please select on the left side “Showcases Application” and click on “Showcase Application Form” in the menu. The applications are submitted via this online application form. Please select the fitting module for your band and enter all information needed.

ON WHICH MODULE SHALL I/MY BAND APPLY?

We have 4 showcase Modules: Polish Night, German Jazz Expo, Overseas Night and European Jazz Meeting. For the Polish Night, the band should be a formation from Poland (this means, the majority of the band members should have a residence in Poland). For the Overseas Night, the band should be a formation from outside of Europe (this means, the majority of the band members should have a residence outside of Europe). For the German Jazz Expo, the band should be a formation from Germany (this means, the majority of the band members should have a residence in Germany). For the European Jazz Meeting, the band should be a European formation (this means, the majority of the band members should have a residence in Europe, excl. Germany and Poland).

You can suggest 1 band for each showcase module only (4 modules = 4 bands max.). The same band cannot be submitted for different modules!

MY BAND IS TOURING, ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BOOKING US?

The jazzahead! showcasing bands apply and are chosen by a jury. jazzahead! does not make the booking for the showcase concerts. Please see the first question for details on how to apply for a showcase concert.
